So Long, Farewell... Again...

You might remember how in March I wrote about the problems the Russian government has been causing for British Petroleum, specifically for BP-TNK, their joint venture in Russia. Among the 148 expat families' whose status in Russia has been in limbo as a result since then were various friends of ours... All of who have now had to leave.

It was with much sadness that we relished our last summer days in the park with Barbara, Bill, Ally and Katie...

This has certainly been a summer of good-byes... If only we had the money (and time) to now visit these dear friends in Argentina, Germany and England... And the dear friends from our first years here who are now in Sweden...

Makes me think of that song from Annie, "It's the Hard Knock Life"...

It's the Expat Life, for us...
It's the Expat Life, for us...
Dollar's so weak...'Steada strong!
Friendships so short...'Steada long!
It's the Expat Life!

One of the major disadvantages of a life like this. We lost several friends this summer too. And just yesterday my daughter out of the blue cried to me that she didn't want to move. I asked her why she was asking that and she didn't seem to have a specific reason. She did go on to ask me if people have to move after a certain time and seemed quite surprised to learn that there are kids that have lived the same place all their lives. She wanted an example but I couldn't come up with anyone she knew. In fact, of all her friends, only one has simply moved within a country. The rest have all shifted between continents.
