Belka and Strelka

After having been stuck home for a week and a half, I took the girls out today to see "Belka and Strelka: Star Dogs." We loved it! The film premiered in the theaters mid-March, but we hadn't seen it yet. I picked up the dvd last week, but I'd heard from others that this is a movie you really want to see in Real 3-D in a theater if you can. It will be coming to the USA in English sometime this year.

The film basically creates a fairy tale version of the true story of Belka (squirrel or "whitey") and Strelka ("arrow"), the first dogs to make an orbital flight into space and return alive. They spent a day aboard the spaceship Sputnik-2 on August 19, 1960. The Soviet space program used stray female dogs; the film versions of these famous pups are also strays. Strelka is an ordinary street dog, while Belka is a famous circus dog who has gotten lost.

These dogs were real heroes in Russia...

There's even an interesting political twist to both the dogs' actual history and the film. The movies opens with a Soviet man boarding a plane carrying a pet carrier... He flies all the way to Washington D.C., where he is welcomed at the White House and he gives a puppy to the President's daughter. That actually happened; Krushchev presented Strelka's puppy "Pushinka" ("Fluffy") to Caroline Kennedy!

Somehow the writers work in a rat who looks an awful lot like Rémy from Ratatouille... Wonder if Pixar is annoyed about that at all...

Check out the trailer; the whole "retro" Soviet setting is great! You really get around Moscow, seeing many familiar (well, to us...) places. The film's website is good, too.

Oh! I would love for Katya to be able to watch that in Russian! The trailer looks really cute. Will you keep an eye out for it for me once it's available on DVD and snag one for me?

Still waiting to talk to you.

Sure, Rach! I'll pick you up a copy :-) It's hard to find illegal dvds now, though... We only buy legal dvds now that are formatted for our region. They work on computers, though, so Katya would watch it on your PC. You're right; it's the perfect movie for Katya! She'll love it!

Oh I would love to have the russian DVD too! Klaire is getting pretty bored with the Peter Pan one I have. I know she would love the dog one! Just tell me what I can do to get one! lol.
Thanks.

That looks like very nice movie. And I hope we will see it here and that the translations are good.
I had no idea that Khrushchev gave a puppy as a gift to White house. Cute

I think I remember that about the puppy being presented to Caroline Kennedy. I know the Kennedys had quite a few animals including Macaroni the pony at the White House.

Thanks for the recommendation! Will definitely keep an eye out for this - looks like a fun way to teach my kids more about their heritage!
